Challenge
With Chilean miners trapped, rescuers needed to send down the ‘Phoenix’ rescue pod networked with a camera for video transmission in order to inspect the rock structure of the tunnel walls. The rescue pod was expected to endure very rugged conditions including extreme heat and a very wet environment. These conditions usually make transmitting the video images back to the rescuers a major problem.

Application Solution

RFID Accelerates Tool Exchange on Mobile Equipment

The simple, safe, and fast exchange of tools is an important sales feature for mobile equipment

Challenge
Depending on the work at hand, mobile equipment tools are frequently changed. This must be accomplished quickly and safely. The goal is to protect tools from damage by automatically adjusting pneumatic operating parameters to increase yield. Unproductive exchange times are shortened and lead to improved time management.

Application Solution
Inside the cab the RFID interface is connected to the onboard CAN bus of the equipment. A compact 18mm read head is mounted at the front of the excavator arm and is connected to the RFID interface using a shielded cable with M12 connection. RFID tags are flush mounted in each attachable tool or bucket and are well protected from the elements by the steel of the tool. The tags carry a unique ID, allowing the mobile equipment to determine the correct pneumatic operating data for the tool. Once the tool has been mechanically linked, the RFID tag is automatically read and the correct parameters are set, assuring proper operation and preventing damage.

All Electric Actuators for Active Seat Suspensions

Actuators used for active Seat Suspension Systems

Active seat suspension systems in large vehicles, trucks, tractors and ships offer an ergonomic benefit to drivers and riders by minimizing operator movement.

Large vehicles that are driven over rugged terrain or on rough seas can impart severe motion to the operator. By sensing a vehicle’s movement, active seat suspension systems position the seat such that the seat movement of the operator is reduced. Active seat suspensions can isolate the operator from nearly all of the seat motion seen in most large vehicles, trucks, tractors and ships.

The excellent response capability of Exlar’s actuators, especially when compared to the slower response of hydraulic actuators, makes them well suited and ideal for an active seat suspension system. Accelerometers and motion sensors capture the movement of the vehicle, and with Exlar’s advanced servo technology the motion of the actuator ‘cancels’ out most of that movement. This is accomplished by moving the seat up or down to keep the driver stable and ergonomically protected from the rough ride of large vehicles, trucks, tractors and ship.

Overview of PLC-SCADA-PC/104 Control System

Remotely operated vehicles get help from SoftPLC

Challenge
The control system outlined here concerns an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV). The offshore Oil and Gas industry has become increasingly dependent on ROVs as the global trend in deep water sea bed installations increases. The system comprises of three control units.

Application Solution
The PLC units are dedicated to updating local data input and transferring this to the remote unit where it is regarded as data to be output. Thus, at any instant, each controller has global data that ‘mirrors’ the last state of the controllers’ I/O. The PLCs are comprised of embedded-PC and I/O modules using the industrial computer PC/104 format and ISA bus standard. The identical surface and subsea controller 80486 DX2/66 processors run a 32bit real- time, multitasking kernel operating system SoftPLC. This operating system, once loaded into RAM, has complete control of the CPU at all times.

Benefit
Redundant path switching for the communications loops to the PLC has been incorporated so, if the primary data path fails, a back up fibre or copper pair can be used to communicate with the other control unit.

Precision Positioning Systems

MOOG Animatics Class 5 IP65 rating motors are suitable in numerous environments for precise position systems that need to maintain stability.

Extremely precise positioning of an apparatus is a common challenge in many industries. Unfortunately, in many cases the system’s environment tends not to favor any sort of stability.

Such in the case when Burchfield Automation desired effective dampening of their pan and tilt positioning system in a bumpy shaky environment.  Fitting a camera to a jarring machine such as a ATV would generally produce undesirable video quality. This becomes even more difficult when the camera is required to pan and tilt or stay focused on a certain object.  Both of these obstacles have been overcome with the use of MOOG/Animatics motors.
